Marcel is the Global Head of Medical Affairs, Rare Diseases at the Chiesi Group, where he provides leadership globally addressing the medical and scientific benefits of marketed as well as candidate treatments for rare and ultra-rare diseases.
He has more than 20 years of a unique combination of on-site leadership experiences at global, regional and country level, in medical affairs and commercial. His most recent rare disease experiences include leadership roles at Sanofi Genzyme managing Rare Disease Registries at the global level as well as in Europe and Latin America; at Ultragenyx he served as Vice President UltraPrograms, Global Medical Affairs, leading teams in support of observational research, early access programs, investigator-initiated studies, grants and medical education.
Marcel earned a M.Sc. in Medical Biology from the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, and a PhD in Molecular (Renal) Cell Physiology from the University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands. In his spare time, he enjoys running, working out in the gym and spending time with his wife and children.
